State within a state? Police block reinstated Jang employees from resuming duties
In Rawalpindi, police obstructed 66 reinstated employees of the Jang Group from resuming work per a court ruling, prompting outrage from union leaders. They accuse the police of collusion with media management.

RAWALPINDI — In a shocking display of defiance against judicial authority, police at Rawalpindi’s Waris Khan Police Station have allegedly sided with the Jang Group’s owner, Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, by blocking the reinstatement of 66 employees ordered by the National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC).

Instead of enforcing the court's decision, a large police contingent was deployed at the main gate of Daily Jang Rawalpindi to stop the workers from entering the premises and resuming their professional duties.

“You should return to court and file contempt proceedings. We will not allow you inside,” SHO Waris Khan Police Station reportedly told union leaders. “Tell the court that the Jang administration refuses to comply with its orders,” he added.

The employees, represented by the All Pakistan Jang Publication and Press Employees Union, insisted they had been reinstated by the court and demanded access to resume work.

“Enforce the court’s orders. We have been reinstated and directed to perform our duties,” said the union president.

The union proposed to peacefully enter the premises in the presence of the police and asked the SHO to have the Jang administration issue a written refusal of the court orders.

“I advise you not to pursue this further. The Jang management has made it clear to me that it will not obey the court ruling. Our duty here is to protect this building,” said the SHO. “If you try to proceed, another FIR could be lodged against you,” he warned.

Union leaders expressed outrage, calling it blatant collusion between the police and media management.

“This is not the first time. A false FIR was filed against us in the middle of the night,” the union president said.

Imran Farooq Butt, another union leader, highlighted their peaceful protest outside the Geo head office in Islamabad during Ramadan.

“We didn’t break a single twig. We’re here today in light of court orders — not to create chaos.”

“You’re obstructing justice and becoming a party in this case,” Butt told the police officers.

The SHO responded by claiming his only role was to advise the workers and prevent any disruption to law and order.

The union has now called on senior police officials — including the SP Waris Khan Circle, CPO and RPO Rawalpindi, and the Punjab IG — to take notice of what they termed as biased actions by the Waris Khan police.

Union representatives also urged Punjab’s Information Minister Azma Bukhari and Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to investigate the apparent collaboration between the police and Jang Group.

“We will pursue every legal and constitutional route — including peaceful protest — to claim our rights and ensure enforcement of court orders,” Imran Farooq Butt stated.

“We strongly condemn the thuggery of Mir Shakil, his accomplices, and the Waris Khan police,” he added.
