NEW YORK-Aaron Brown, a distinguished American broadcast journalist renowned for his calm and insightful reporting, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 76.
Born on November 10, 1948, in Hopkins, Minnesota, Brown's journalism career spanned several decades, during which he became a trusted voice in news broadcasting. He began his career in local news, working in Seattle for over 15 years, before transitioning to national networks. At ABC News, he was the founding anchor of "World News Now" and served as a reporter for "World News Tonight" and "Nightline."
In June 2001, Brown joined CNN, where his first day on air coincided with the tragic events of September 11, 2001. His composed and comprehensive coverage from the rooftop of CNN's Manhattan building earned him widespread acclaim and the Edward R. Murrow Award. Reflecting on that day, Brown remarked, "It captures what television ought to capture—which is the totality of a story."
After departing CNN in 2005, Brown continued to contribute to journalism as the anchor of the PBS documentary series "Wide Angle" from 2008 to 2009. He also shared his expertise with aspiring journalists as a professor at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University from 2007 to 2014.
Brown is survived by his wife, Charlotte Raynor, whom he married in 1982, and their daughter, Gabby. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and viewers alike, who remember him as a quintessential newsman with a unique talent and a beautiful way with words.
