PTV World revamp collapses as Talat Hussain quits, digital shift now on the cards
The ambitious revamp of PTV World has failed, with journalist Talat Hussain stepping down from his advisory role. The government now plans to focus on a digital platform.

ISLAMABAD — Ambitious plans to revamp and relaunch PTV World, Pakistan’s English-language news channel, have quietly collapsed, with insiders confirming the government now intends to focus instead on building a digital platform, a JournalismPakistan.com investigation has revealed.

In May, amid heightened tensions with India and a wave of propaganda from Indian media outlets, Pakistani authorities floated the idea of strengthening the country’s international media presence. The plan was to counter disinformation by overhauling PTV World into a credible global news platform.

However, the plan soon lost momentum.

Launched in 2011-2012, PTV World has long suffered from mismanagement and financial instability. The revival was seen as an opportunity to restore Pakistan’s image globally. To lead this transformation, senior journalist Talat Hussain was approached. Though initially reluctant to accept a government role, he eventually agreed to come on board as an advisor for six weeks to oversee hiring and strategy.

A significant budget was sanctioned, and it was decided that the revamped PTV World would operate not from PTV’s headquarters, but from the former STN facility in Islamabad’s H-9 sector. While the PTV Union initially opposed this relocation, they eventually relented.

Plans included hiring up to 446 staff members — 45 in administration alone — a figure that drew criticism, with observers noting the entire HUM Network operates with a similar headcount. For the position of Chief Editor, the number of applicants was so overwhelming that it crashed the online recruitment system, forcing a two-day extension.

Despite Talat Hussain’s efforts and a revised strategy, the initiative faltered. Last week, he stepped down before completing his advisory tenure. Journalist Namood Muslim has now taken charge of the channel.

According to insiders, the decision has been made to abandon the relaunch, and PTV World will likely remain in its current form — underfunded, underperforming, and largely irrelevant in the competitive media landscape.
