PEMRA suspends 7 News license for seven days
PEMRA has suspended the license of 7 News for a week due to unethical reporting on female students. The suspension is effective from November 1 to November 8.

ISLAMABAD – Electronic media regulator PEMRA Friday approved suspension of 7 News license for seven days for airing concocted, unverified and unethical stories about female students of Government College University, Faisalabad.

A PEMRA press release said the false news not only damaged the reputation and goodwill of the university but also subjected the students, their parents, friends, and relatives to severe mental and psychological agony and torture.

The suspension comes into effect on November 1 from 8:00 am and runs until November 8 (7:59 am).

The PEMRA’s Council of Complaints had recommended a one-month suspension. However, the Authority took a lenient view and cut down the length of the recommended punishment.

The PEMRA meeting also decided to write to the Punjab government for initiating criminal proceedings against the channel’s directors.

KEY POINTS:

  • Suspension is due to broadcasting unverified stories about students.
  • The channel's reporting harmed the reputation of Government College University.
