Outrage as Geo security guards attack workers protesting unpaid wages
Security guards allegedly affiliated with Geo Group attacked Jang media workers protesting for unpaid wages. The incident has drawn condemnation from journalistic unions and raised concerns about workers' rights.

ISLAMABAD—Security guards allegedly belonging to Geo Group attacked a peaceful protest camp of Jang media workers demanding their unpaid wages. The camp, organized by the Union of Punjabi Journalists (UPJ) and the Professional Journalists Group, had been ongoing for the past eight days.

Reports say, a group of men led by Geo's Assistant Manager and Admin Manager, along with 8 to 10 security staff and unidentified individuals, stormed the protest site. They tore down banners, removed posters, and attempted to take them inside the Geo building. Protesters reported that they were threatened with dire consequences if they continued their demonstration.

UPJ Chairman strongly condemned the attack, stating, “We will not be intimidated by Mir Shakil’s bullying tactics.” He further criticized the Geo Group’s management, saying, “Those who claim to fight for press freedom have now revealed their true face.”

A written complaint has been filed at the relevant police station against this illegal and unconstitutional act. UPJ leaders questioned why the media giant is receiving millions in government advertisements while failing to pay the hardworking journalists who sustain the organization.

Veteran journalist Malik Abdul Jabbar criticized the media house, stating, “Instead of paying rightful wages, Mir Shakil has resorted to tyranny. His shameless exploitation of workers must end.” He further called on the government to intervene and ensure that journalists receive their rightful salaries rather than acting as silent spectators.

The attack has sparked outrage among journalist unions and media workers, who see it as an alarming attempt to silence dissent within the industry. The protest was a call for justice, highlighting how media tycoons profit while workers struggle to make ends meet. The protesters said the hypocrisy of Geo Group—advocating for press freedom while crushing workers’ rights—has been laid bare for all to see.
