Prominent journalist Moeed Pirzada announced he will report Fakhar Durrani to the FBI for alleged illegal access to his private banking records. The dispute escalated following Durrani's investigation into Pirzada's property purchase in the US.

Pirzada alleges that Durrani illegally accessed his private banking information, which he says is a grave breach of financial privacy and US banking laws.

In an investigative piece published in The News on May 22, Durrani questioned how Pirzada, after leaving Pakistan, managed to purchase “a luxurious 2 Kanal house worth $1.05 million in Potomac, Maryland—one of the posh areas in the United States.”

Pirzada says he intends to submit to the FBI the email Durrani sent him on May 19, the published story, and a video interview Durrani conducted with journalist Azaz Syed. “These materials show a serious violation of banking regulations. The US State Department should also be informed, particularly because Durrani frequently travels to America,” he said. Pirzada further claimed that this case qualifies as transnational repression, stating, “Because I am a journalist under threat.”

Pirzada left Pakistan on October 30, 2022, citing life threats. Since then, he has been named in multiple legal cases in Pakistan, largely tied to his social media activity and alleged anti-state narratives.

Defending the source of his property investment in the US, Pirzada explained that the house was purchased using funds from the sale of their UK apartment. “My wife, an Economics graduate from LSE London and a Masters in International Finance from Columbia University New York, has worked with international consulting firms like NERA and US investment banks like Lehman Brothers, as well as Standard Chartered UK. That explains our London apartment, bought in 2006 and sold in 2023 to fund the US house.”

Pirzada also questioned whether Durrani could have obtained the financial data without help from Pakistani intelligence agencies. Calling Durrani “an incompetent journalist who cannot even read a tax return,” he added, “My wife declared our London apartment in her Pakistani tax returns. Mr. Fakhar Durrani stole my US banking information, misinformed the public about our London apartment, and discussed our family properties with Aizaz Syed in a manner that suggests he sees himself as above the law.”

In response, Durrani categorically denied any association with intelligence agencies. “The day it is proven that I am on the payroll of intelligence agencies, I will quit journalism,” he said. “Those who conduct financial investigations understand how such data is legally obtained.”

Durrani also defended The News against accusations of bias. In a May 24 post on X, he stated: “My organization only became aware of this news when I filed it. It was not published for four days. The Jang Group sent the story to legal consultants in the UK and the US. After all questions and evidence were verified with me, the editorial board cleared it. There is a significant difference between perception and reality.”

In another post the same day, he wrote, “I want to make it clear that I have never been in contact with anyone in ISI. If anyone can prove otherwise, I will quit journalism.”
