Moeed Pirzada to report journalist Fakhar Durrani to FBI over alleged data theft

ISLAMABAD — The escalating feud between prominent journalist Moeed Pirzada and investigative reporter Fakhar Durrani (pictured) of The News has taken a serious turn, with Pirzada announcing plans to report Durrani to the FBI and the US State Department.

Pirzada alleges that Durrani illegally accessed his private banking information, which he says is a grave breach of financial privacy and US banking laws.

In an investigative piece published in The News on May 22, Durrani questioned how Pirzada, after leaving Pakistan, managed to purchase “a luxurious 2 Kanal house worth $1.05 million in Potomac, Maryland—one of the posh areas in the United States.”

Pirzada says he intends to submit to the FBI the email Durrani sent him on May 19, the published story, and a video interview Durrani conducted with journalist Azaz Syed. “These materials show a serious violation of banking regulations. The US State Department should also be informed, particularly because Durrani frequently travels to America,” he said. Pirzada further claimed that this case qualifies as transnational repression, stating, “Because I am a journalist under threat.”

Pirzada left Pakistan on October 30, 2022, citing life threats. Since then, he has been named in multiple legal cases in Pakistan, largely tied to his social media activity and alleged anti-state narratives.

Defending the source of his property investment in the US, Pirzada explained that the house was purchased using funds from the sale of their UK apartment. “My wife, an Economics graduate from LSE London and a Masters in International Finance from Columbia University New York, has worked with international consulting firms like NERA and US investment banks like Lehman Brothers, as well as Standard Chartered UK. That explains our London apartment, bought in 2006 and sold in 2023 to fund the US house.”

Pirzada also questioned whether Durrani could have obtained the financial data without help from Pakistani intelligence agencies. Calling Durrani “an incompetent journalist who cannot even read a tax return,” he added, “My wife declared our London apartment in her Pakistani tax returns. Mr. Fakhar Durrani stole my US banking information, misinformed the public about our London apartment, and discussed our family properties with Aizaz Syed in a manner that suggests he sees himself as above the law.”

In response, Durrani categorically denied any association with intelligence agencies. “The day it is proven that I am on the payroll of intelligence agencies, I will quit journalism,” he said. “Those who conduct financial investigations understand how such data is legally obtained.”

Durrani also defended The News against accusations of bias. In a May 24 post on X, he stated: “My organization only became aware of this news when I filed it. It was not published for four days. The Jang Group sent the story to legal consultants in the UK and the US. After all questions and evidence were verified with me, the editorial board cleared it. There is a significant difference between perception and reality.”

In another post the same day, he wrote, “I want to make it clear that I have never been in contact with anyone in ISI. If anyone can prove otherwise, I will quit journalism.”

اسلام آباد — معروف صحافی معید پیرزادہ اور دی نیوز سے تعلق رکھنے والے تحقیقاتی رپورٹر فخر درانی کے درمیان تنازع شدت اختیار کر گیا ہے، معید نے فخر درانی کو ایف بی آئی اور امریکی محکمہ خارجہ کو رپورٹ کرنے کا اعلان کیا ہے۔

معید کا الزام ہے کہ درانی نے ان کی نجی بینکنگ معلومات غیر قانونی طور پر حاصل کیں، جو کہ مالیاتی رازداری اور امریکی بینکاری قوانین کی سنگین خلاف ورزی ہے۔

دی نیوز میں 22 مئی کو شائع ہونے والی ایک رپورٹ میں، درانی نے سوال اٹھایا کہ پاکستان سے فرار کے بعد معید پیرزادہ نے "امریکہ کے پوش علاقے میری لینڈ کے پوٹومک میں دو کنال کا پرتعیش گھر 10.5 لاکھ ڈالر میں کیسے خریدا؟"

معید کا کہنا ہے کہ وہ 19 مئی کو فخر درانی کی طرف سے موصولہ ای میل، دی نیوز میں شائع شدہ خبر، اور ایاز سید کے ساتھ انٹرویو کو ایف بی آئی کو فراہم کریں گے۔ "یہ شواہد بینکاری قواعد کی سنگین خلاف ورزی کو ظاہر کرتے ہیں۔ امریکی محکمہ خارجہ کو بھی آگاہ کیا جانا چاہیے کیونکہ فخر درانی بار بار امریکہ کا سفر کرتے ہیں۔" معید نے دعویٰ کیا کہ یہ معاملہ بین الاقوامی جبر (transnational repression) کے زمرے میں آتا ہے، کیونکہ "میں ایک خطرے سے دوچار صحافی ہوں۔"

معید نے 30 اکتوبر 2022 کو پاکستان چھوڑ دیا تھا، ان کا کہنا تھا کہ ان کی جان کو خطرہ ہے۔ تب سے وہ پاکستان میں مختلف مقدمات کا سامنا کر رہے ہیں، جن کا تعلق ان کی سوشل میڈیا سرگرمیوں اور مبینہ ریاست مخالف بیانیوں سے ہے۔

اپنے دفاع میں، معید نے وضاحت دی کہ امریکہ میں گھر کی خریداری کے لیے رقم برطانیہ میں ان کے اپارٹمنٹ کی فروخت سے حاصل ہوئی۔ "میری اہلیہ نے لندن اسکول آف اکنامکس سے اکنامکس میں گریجویشن اور کولمبیا یونیورسٹی نیویارک سے انٹرنیشنل فنانس میں ماسٹرز کیا ہے۔ انہوں نے بین الاقوامی مشاورتی اداروں (NERA)، امریکی سرمایہ کاری بینکوں (جیسے لیہمن برادرز)، اور برطانوی بینک اسٹینڈرڈ چارٹرڈ کے ساتھ کام کیا۔ 2006 میں خریدا گیا لندن کا اپارٹمنٹ 2023 میں بیچ کر امریکی گھر میں ڈپازٹ کیا گیا۔"

معید نے سوال اٹھایا کہ کیا فخر درانی یہ مالیاتی معلومات پاکستان کی خفیہ ایجنسیوں کی مدد کے بغیر حاصل کر سکتے تھے؟ انہوں نے فخر کو "نااہل صحافی" قرار دیتے ہوئے کہا کہ وہ ٹیکس ریٹرن بھی نہیں پڑھ سکتے۔ "میری اہلیہ نے پاکستان میں اپنے ٹیکس گوشواروں میں لندن اپارٹمنٹ ظاہر کیا۔ جناب فخر درانی نے میری امریکی بینکنگ معلومات چرائیں، عوام کو لندن اپارٹمنٹ کے بارے میں گمراہ کیا، اور ایاز سید کے ساتھ ہمارے خاندانی اثاثوں پر گفتگو کی گویا وہ قانون سے بالاتر ہیں۔"

دوسری جانب فخر درانی نے انٹیلیجنس ایجنسیوں سے کسی بھی قسم کے تعلق کی سختی سے تردید کی۔ "جس دن یہ ثابت ہو گیا کہ میں خفیہ ایجنسیوں کے پے رول پر ہوں، میں صحافت چھوڑ دوں گا۔ مالی تحقیقات کرنے والے جانتے ہیں کہ اس قسم کا ڈیٹا قانونی طور پر کیسے حاصل کیا جاتا ہے۔"

فخر درانی نے دی نیوز کا بھی دفاع کیا۔ 24 مئی کو ایکس پر اپنی پوسٹ میں انہوں نے کہا: "میری تنظیم کو اس خبر کا علم اس وقت ہوا جب میں نے اسے فائل کیا۔ چار دن تک خبر شائع نہیں ہوئی۔ برطانیہ اور امریکہ میں جنگ گروپ نے اسے قانونی مشیران کو بھیجا۔ تمام سوالات، جوابات اور شواہد کی تصدیق کے بعد ایڈیٹوریل بورڈ نے خبر کو کلیئر کیا۔ تاثر اور حقیقت میں بڑا فرق ہوتا ہے۔"

اسی روز ایک اور پوسٹ میں انہوں نے لکھا: "میں واضح کرنا چاہتا ہوں کہ میرا آئی ایس آئی کے کسی بھی فرد سے کبھی رابطہ نہیں رہا۔ اگر کوئی اس کے برعکس ثابت کر دے، تو میں صحافت چھوڑ دوں گا۔"
