Minister hints at withdrawing amendment to FIA Act
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah indicated a potential withdrawal of amendments related to the FIA Act affecting social media regulation. The government will consult with stakeholders to ensure the amendments do not undermine freedom of expression.

ISLAMABAD—Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has hinted at withdrawing the FIA law amendment to control social media.

On Wednesday, the federal cabinet approved the summary of amendments to the schedule of the FIA Act, 1974, on behalf of the Interior Ministry, delegating powers for action against those who make social media posts against state institutions.

In a tweet, the minister said the government would hold talks with the representatives of journalists and other stakeholders over the amendments in the FIA Act. “If it hinges on the freedom of expression, the government would withdraw the bill.”

However, he added that there are “things on social media which should be controlled.” The minister maintained that privacy had been violated.
