Gandapur promises to honor journalism hero Arshad Sharif

ISLAMABAD—Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has pledged to name a journalism department in an educational institution after slain journalist Arshad Sharif.

In an interview with analyst Ather Kazmi on Suno TV, Gandapur made the commitment after being asked why his government had not taken any practical steps to honor Sharif, using his name only for political purposes.

Responding to the question, Gandapur acknowledged that no one had given him such an idea before. "You have given me a good idea; nobody had suggested this before. Now, after Eid, I will associate a journalism department with Arshad Sharif. Thank you very much for this. You will see action on this," he said.

Arshad Sharif was a prominent Pakistani investigative journalist known for his fearless reporting. He worked with major news outlets, including ARY News and Dawn, and gained recognition for his coverage of corruption, human rights abuses, and political scandals. His outspoken stance often put him at odds with authorities, leading to legal troubles and threats. In 2022, Sharif fled Pakistan after facing sedition charges, which he claimed were politically motivated. Tragically, on October 23, 2022, he was shot dead in Nairobi, Kenya, under mysterious circumstances.
