Dawn criticizes Gandapur's sexist remarks against women

ISLAMABAD—Daily Dawn on Wednesday sharply criticized Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur for making sexist remarks directed at Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and female journalists.

In an editorial, Dawn condemned Gandapur's derogatory comments made during a recent PTI rally, where he used demeaning language and innuendo to belittle Maryam Nawaz. His speech also included an inappropriate reference to female journalists by quoting a Punjabi song, further intensifying the backlash.

"This strategic dollop of misogyny aims to diminish women's status and contribution in public life. By policing their opinions and eroding their stature, it attempts to render a woman's role in society indiscernible," the editorial stated.

The piece shed light on the growing concerns regarding the entrenched sexism within Pakistan's political landscape. Such behavior, Dawn emphasized, not only disrespects women but actively discourages their participation in politics and public life. The newspaper called on political leaders to foster a culture of respect and gender equality, urging lawmakers to take a firm stance against misogynistic attitudes and language.

Despite a formal apology from the PTI Chairman in the National Assembly, Dawn expressed deep concern over reports that the jailed party founder, Imran Khan, defended Gandapur’s remarks. This defense has triggered widespread condemnation across the political spectrum.

"All parliamentarians should unite to censure sexist language, irrespective of the speaker's political affiliation. It's time that disrespect for women came with serious consequences," the editorial concluded.

In protest, journalists covering the National Assembly staged a walkout, condemning the attack on female journalists. Media bodies across the country criticized Gandapur's remarks and called for accountability.
