Court orders inquiry against The News reporter Umar Cheema
A court in Peshawar has ordered an inquiry against reporter Umar Cheema for allegedly defaming a police officer. The inquiry follows a damage suit filed by the officer, who has accused Cheema of running a baseless story.

PESHAWAR – A court in Peshawar has ordered an inquiry against The News reporter Umar Cheema following an application filed by a senior police officer who has accused him of defamation for running a baseless story against him.

Dawn reported Friday that the Additional District and Sessions Judge Jehangir Khan issued the orders on DIG Police Dr. Fasihuddin’s application.

The court directed Peshawar SSP (Investigation) to conduct the inquiry and submit a report before December 2, the next date of hearing.

Dawn said that Fasihuddin had earlier filed a damages suit against Cheema. The reporter was asked to pay Rs1 million in fine to the applicant.

The police officer has now filed an application with the court under Sections 200 and 250 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and Sections 499, 500 and 502 of the Pakistan Penal Code for criminal defamation against Cheema.
