Amir Mir joins Dunya Group

Amir Mir has taken on the role of project head for a new Urdu newspaper at Dunya Group. The newspaper is set to launch in August, and hiring is underway.

ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist Amir Mir has joined Dunya Group as the project head of an Urdu newspaper that the television channel’s management plans to bring out this year.

Amir, brother of prominent television anchor Hamid Mir and Imran Mir, also a television journalist, has joined in from English daily The News where he was a Deputy Editor. Insiders tell JournalismPakistan.com that the Dunya managers are aiming to launch the newspaper this August and hiring is currently on.

Amir began his journalistic career in 1988 with English daily The Frontier Post and later went on to work for numerous national newspapers, magazines, news agencies and websites.

During his career, he has worked for The News, The Nation, The Post, The Friday Times, Gulf News, Arab News, weekly Independent, Herald, Newsline, Reuters, Spanish News Agency, Outlook, Weekly Tehelka, Daily News & Analysis (DNA), Rediff.com, Inter Press Service (IPS) and Asia Times Online.

He was the Editor of weekly Independent that ran into problems with the regime of Pervez Musharraf for running content that did not go down well with that government.

Last month there were reports that Dunya management was looking to hire veteran journalist Arif Nizami, as a group editor for its Urdu newspaper.

However, negotiations reportedly fell through after the owner and Chief Executive of Dunya, Mian Amir Mehmood asked Nizami to merge Pakistan Today with the Dunya Group.

Nizami, who edits Pakistan Today, was reportedly willing to do so but his investors and Chief Executive Officer Babar Nizami did not agree to the proposal.
