RIUJ forms committee after threats to Hamid Mir, two others
ISLAMABAD: Expressing concern over a threatening press release against media persons issued by Shuhda Foundation (Lal Masjid), the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) has constituted a five-member committee to resolve the issue.

In a satement Monday, the RIUJ termed the press release issued against senior journalist and Geo TV anchor Hamid Mir, The News staffer Amir Mir and Dawn's Kalbe Ali as an attack on freedom of press and speech.

"We have always struggled for independent and neutral media in the country while the Shuhda Foundation's statement is against the freedom of press. We condemn it," the RIUJ said.

A five member committee headed by National Press Club President Shaharyar Khan has been constituted to look into the matter and resolve the issue through negotiations with the Lal Masjid administration.

Members of the committee are Secretary NPC Tariq Chaudhry, General Secretary RIUJ Bilal Dar, Sabookh Syed and Ali Sher.
