PEMRA clarifies position regarding NewsOne
PEMRA has clarified its position regarding NewsOne, stating no disciplinary action has been initiated. The authority awaits a response from the channel before proceeding further.

ISLAMABAD—The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has said that it had not yet initiated any disciplinary action or directed cable operators to take NewsOne TV off the air.

According to a press statement issued on Tuesday, the regulator said it had summoned the channel's CEO on Feb 15, adding that any other proceedings would be initiated only after a response from the TV channel.

The statement, however, was issued two days after media reported that the TV channel was taken off air by cable networks even before legal formalities had been completed.

PEMRA had earlier issued a notice to the TV channel for airing controversial remarks about Federal Minister Murad Saeed in the program G for Gharidah.

KEY POINTS:

  • PEMRA has not taken action against NewsOne yet.
  • The channel's CEO was summoned on February 15.
  • No legal formalities completed before cable networks acted.
  • A notice was previously issued for controversial remarks.
  • Further action will depend on NewsOne's response.
