Pakistan's crackdown on journalism: IFJ demands Farhan Mallick's immediate release
Farhan Mallick, a Karachi journalist, was arrested on charges of inciting fake news. The International Federation of Journalists demands his release, signifying rising concerns over press freedom in Pakistan.

SYDNEY—The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has strongly condemned the charges against Karachi journalist and founder of digital news platform Raftar, Farhan Mallick, calling for his immediate release. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has also denounced the case, labeling it a blatant attack on press freedom in Pakistan.

Mallick was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime Unit on March 20, accused of inciting fake news and promoting anti-state agendas. He was picked up in Gulistan-i-Johar and charged under Sections 16, 20, and 26 (a) of the amended Prevention of Crimes and Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) as well as Sections 109 and 500 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). Authorities allege that Raftar’s content included fake news and public incitement. Following his arrest, a Karachi Judicial Magistrate granted a four-day remand, handing him over to the FIA for further investigation. The agency has since seized data, computers, laptops, documents, and transcripts from the Raftar office. The platform's website is now blocked.

Mallick, previously a news director at Samaa TV, launched Raftar in 2022 as an independent digital media platform. The outlet quickly gained traction, amassing over 760,000 YouTube subscribers within three years for its investigative political reporting.

During a press conference on March 21, FIA’s cybercrime additional director, Shahzad Haider, stated that an inquiry into Mallick’s activities began three months earlier after Raftar aired content allegedly targeting the security establishment. Officials claim that YouTube videos from the platform defamed dignitaries and harmed the reputation of state institutions at the international level.

Mallick’s son reported on X that FIA officials had raided the Raftar office on March 19, harassing staff and demanding that Mallick appear at FIA headquarters. During the raid, FIA agents allegedly threatened anyone associated with the publication and confiscated electronic devices containing purportedly incriminating material.

Protests erupted following Mallick’s arrest. On March 23, members of the Sukkur Union of Journalists and the PFUJ demonstrated outside the Magistrate’s Court, condemning the arrest as an attack on press freedom. The next day, Raftar filed a petition with the Sindh High Court seeking the dismissal of all charges, arguing that the FIR was malicious and aimed at harassment. Mallick has faced similar intimidation before; in December 2024, he was detained for hours at Karachi Airport after being prevented from boarding a flight to Doha.

The IFJ’s South Asia Press Freedom Report 2023-24 highlighted that more than 300 journalists and bloggers faced state coercion and harassment, with dozens detained for periods ranging from several hours to four weeks. IFJ monitoring revealed that nearly 60 journalists received legal notices or summons for their work or personal dissent online. At least eight journalists were charged with sedition, terrorism, or incitement to violence—serious offenses carrying severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The PFUJ said: “We strongly condemn the unlawful arrest of media personnel and the registration of a fabricated case based on baseless allegations. We demand Mallick’s immediate release.”

The IFJ stated: “The arrest of senior journalist Farhan Mallick and the arbitrary raid on Raftar is an alarming case of state harassment against a media outlet publishing in the public interest. This incident has serious implications for press freedom in Pakistan. The state’s campaign against Mallick must end. Journalists must be allowed to report freely without fear of retaliation.”
