Marking 16 years of independent reporting, JournalismPakistan.com, co-founded by journalists Steve Manuel and Imran Naeem Ahmad, has overcome censorship and cyberattacks to remain a trusted source for all who love and follow the media, in Pakistan and beyond.Summary
ISLAMABAD — As JournalismPakistan.com turns 16 today (October 24), its story stands as a testament to endurance, integrity, and independence in a digital landscape where those values are often under siege. Established in 2009 by journalists Steve Manuel and Imran Naeem Ahmad, the website has grown beyond its original mission of chronicling the experiences of journalists to become a trusted space for anyone who follows the media, from students, researchers, and policy-makers to members of the development community who rely on credible reporting and media analysis.
Born from a simple yet defiant idea — to create a space where journalists could tell their own stories freely — the site has weathered censorship, cyberattacks, and corporate intimidation. Through every challenge, it has emerged stronger, building a loyal following among media professionals, educators, and readers who seek authenticity and truth in a climate where both are increasingly rare.
The Beginning of a Bold Idea
When JournalismPakistan.com first went live, Pakistan’s media scene was crowded but lacked introspection. Amid a surge of TV channels and newspapers, few platforms critically examined the industry itself. That gap inspired the creation of the country’s first independent website dedicated to journalism and the media.
“The idea was simple but necessary,” says co-founder, editor, and publisher Imran Naeem Ahmad. “We wanted to provide a platform that told the stories of journalists themselves, without fear, without spin, and without any agenda. It was about media people telling media stories.”
From newsroom politics to the challenges faced by field reporters, the site became a mirror to the profession and a watchdog when few others dared to play that role.
Surviving Censorship and Suppression
The platform has faced the full spectrum of pressures that independent media in Pakistan often encounter, subtle and overt censorship, legal threats, and online attacks aimed at silencing it.
“There were times we didn’t know if the site would survive,” recalls Imran. “We’ve been hacked at least four times since we started. Our social media pages were blocked without explanation, and powerful people in the industry have threatened to take us to court for simply reporting the truth. But every time, we’ve come back stronger.”
Each setback, he says, only strengthened their resolve. “Every attempt to silence us reminded us why we exist. JournalismPakistan.com was never about comfort; it was about courage.”
A Digital Newsroom That Refused to Give Up
Operating without big sponsors or political patrons, the site has sustained itself through credibility and commitment. “The easiest thing in Pakistan’s media is to align with power,” says Imran. “But we’ve refused to play that game. We have no hidden backers, no corporate masters. That independence is both our pride and our burden.”
Standing Apart in an Era of Noise
Today, JournalismPakistan.com stands out by maintaining integrity in an increasingly chaotic media environment. Its readers include journalists, communication students, civil society professionals, and international observers who value authentic, fact-based media reporting.
“What sets us apart is that we are accountable to no one except our readers,” says Imran. “We don’t push anyone’s agenda. We don’t sensationalize. We don’t sell space for propaganda. And that’s why people trust us.”
The Price of Independence
Remaining independent has often meant exclusion from industry events and pressure from those uncomfortable with scrutiny. “The industry’s big players haven’t always liked what we do,” Imran says. “We’ve been threatened with legal action simply for publishing facts others wanted to bury. But we have never retracted a story under pressure. Not once.”
Building a Trusted Community
Over 16 years, JournalismPakistan.com has evolved into a vibrant community. Journalists, students, and policy professionals regularly reach out with story ideas or media reflections. The platform’s fellowship announcements have also guided many young professionals toward meaningful opportunities.
“We’ve watched young journalists who used to visit our site for guidance now leading newsrooms,” says Imran. “That’s something we’re very proud of.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Independent Media
With plans to expand into multimedia storytelling, strengthen investigative work, and build educational partnerships, the founders remain focused on keeping the platform relevant and principled.
“We’re exploring new ways to engage readers, through video, podcasts, and partnerships that align with our values,” says Imran. “But one thing will never change: our independence. That’s our core identity.”
Sixteen Years of No Orders, Just Journalism
As JournalismPakistan.com marks its 16th anniversary, its message remains clear: independence still matters. In a country where many voices have been muted, it continues to speak freely, quietly at times, courageously always, and truthfully without fail.
“For sixteen years, we’ve stood by our motto: ‘No orders. Just journalism,” says Imran. “It hasn’t been easy. But it’s been worth it. We’re still here, and that in itself is a victory.”
