ISLAMABAD—The Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) has voiced serious concerns regarding the escalating online threats directed at Absa Komal, a prominent Pakistani journalist and anchor with DawnNews Television.
These threats intensified following Komal’s outspoken condemnation of a recent attack on the Christian community in Sargodha.
The threats against Komal have been particularly alarming, with one prominent threat coming from a member of a religio-political party known for its extremist views.
The CFWIJ has highlighted the severe risks faced by female journalists in Pakistan, particularly when they engage in coverage of sensitive or controversial issues.
Absa Komal's condemnation of the attack on the Christian community was intended to bring attention to the rising sectarian violence and promote a message of tolerance and protection for religious minorities. Instead, it has resulted in a barrage of online abuse and explicit threats to her safety.
In response to these developments, the CFWIJ has issued a call for immediate protection for Komal and urged Pakistani authorities to take swift and decisive action against the perpetrators. "The threats against Absa Komal are not just an attack on one journalist but on press freedom in Pakistan as a whole," said a spokesperson for the coalition. "We demand that the authorities ensure her safety and hold those responsible for these threats accountable."
The situation underscores the perilous environment faced by journalists in Pakistan, especially women, who often confront additional layers of risk and harassment. The CFWIJ’s call for action highlights the urgent need for protective measures to safeguard press freedom and the personal security of journalists like Komal.
