Pakistan asks social media platforms to block 'terrorist' accounts and share user data
The Pakistani government has called on global social media platforms to remove accounts associated with terrorism. Officials emphasize the need for better coordination and the use of AI to prevent the emergence of mirror accounts.

ISLAMABAD — In a fresh attempt to assert control over digital spaces, the Pakistani government has urged global social media platforms to block accounts it deems linked to terrorism and to share the data of such users with authorities.

At a press conference held in Islamabad, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and Minister of State for Law Barrister Aqeel Malik outlined their demands and concerns regarding the use of social media by banned groups.

“People with guns are now using social media platforms. Many proscribed organizations are using these platforms. They are under UN sanctions, USA, UK, and also banned in Pakistan,” said Minister Chaudhry.

He emphasized action under the National Action Plan against individuals involved in terrorist activities and those spreading propaganda online. “I am talking about all hardcore terrorist groups and terrorists who are operating their accounts on different social media platforms in the freedom of speech. We want to block/remove the accounts. The second is to use AI measures to stop mirror accounts. Whenever an account is blocked or removed, in minutes they come up with mirror accounts; and thirdly, the most important is to share information of the account holders because they are also part and parcel of terrorist organizations and terrorists," he said.

"I want to request social media operators and platforms to cooperate with us on the blockage/removal of accounts, taking AI measures to stop mirror accounts and to share information of account holders who are operating these accounts," he added.

Minister Malik stated: "There's been a trend on social media, and various apps, that we have seen, whether that's X, or Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram. We would like to welcome these platforms to open up their offices in Pakistan for better coordination to address serious issues like the presence of these terrorist organizations, or proscribed organizations, or sanctioned organizations on social media platforms." He named TTP, ISK, BLA, and BLF as examples.

This move comes in the wake of the government’s earlier order to block 27 YouTube channels operated by independent journalists and opposition voices on vague “anti-state” grounds—an order that was later suspended by a court, which criticized the lack of due process.

Veteran journalist Matiullah Jan criticized the government’s press conference on X (formerly Twitter), calling it “a very poor show to present Pakistan’s case.”

“There is no denying of the fact that terrorist organizations’ accounts are banned by social media companies as a matter of policy,” Jan said. He accused the ministers of failing to explain the recent court suspension and described the linking of political activists to terrorism as a “white lie.”

“Such govt actions and poorly managed press conferences give a very negative impression (though rightly so) of state of press freedom in Pakistan,” Jan added. “So why should social media companies come and establish their offices in Pakistan in these circumstances?”

Jan also pointed out the contradiction in the government’s claim of not wanting to “build walls” while billions have allegedly been spent on a national firewall project with no accountability.
