Pakistan delegation's secret visit to Israel sparks controversy
A group of Pakistani journalists and filmmakers recently visited Israel, raising questions about potential diplomatic ties. The visit included notable sites and discussions on normalization of relations with Israel.

ISLAMABAD—A delegation of Pakistani journalists, documentary filmmakers, and researchers secretly visited Israel last week, according to Israeli media reports. The visit, which included stops in Tel Aviv and occupied Jerusalem, was facilitated by Sharaka. This Israeli non-governmental organization aims to foster diplomatic and cultural relations between Middle Eastern and Asian nations.

Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom reported that the delegation toured several sites, including museums and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Sharaka, on its website, states that it is committed to promoting "people-to-people diplomacy in the Middle East through various projects to build communities, educate, and facilitate engagement around the Abraham Accords."

One of the journalists, Qaiser Abbas, speaking on the condition of anonymity regarding his photograph, claimed that his visit was purely personal. However, the newspaper quoted him as saying that he was not afraid of revealing his identity. "As journalists, our pursuit of truth knows no boundaries. This visit is not about Israel specifically but about gaining knowledge globally," he remarked.

Another member, Shabbir Khan, who also refused to have his photograph published, stated that normalizing Pakistan-Israel relations was possible but would face resistance from "extremist Islamic groups." He estimated that the process could take 10 to 20 years and described Israel as “remarkably welcoming.”

Sharaka’s head, Dan Feferman, commented on the visit, saying, "We are excited to welcome another Pakistani delegation to Israel, where they will learn about the Holocaust as part of our program. This initiative supports our broader mission of fostering peace between Israel and the Arab and Islamic world."

Pakistani documentary filmmaker Sabeen Agha, another delegate, expressed her long-held desire to visit Israel to answer lingering questions in her mind. "I wanted to clear the confusion instilled in me by my country and the Muslim world about Jews," she told the newspaper.

The delegation also visited historical and cultural landmarks, including the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Center and the Israeli Knesset in Jerusalem.
