ISLAMABAD: Journalists staged a walkout Monday from press galleries of the National Assembly and Senate to express solidarity with BOL News Television workers who have not been paid their salaries for the last four months.
Under the auspices of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), media workers from across Pakistan began a sit-in in front of the Parliament House demanding of the government to unfreeze bank accounts of BOL News.
“We will continue our protest till the government announces unfreezing BOL accounts and withdraws its earlier directive of suspending the channel's license,” said President National Press Club Shaharyar Khan.
He also accused the government of backing other media groups against BOL. “The government should facilitate the upcoming channel instead of trying to block its way,” he said.
The channel's bank accounts were frozen and its license suspended in May after The New York Times broke an alleged fake degree scandal of Axact, parent company of BOL.
Minister for Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah Khan assured the protesting journalists that the matter would be resolved and that they should end the protest. “Information Minister is in Belarus with the prime minister and I’ll talk to him to get your (journalists) genuine issues resolved as soon as he returns,” he said.
Dozens of male and female journalists started camping outside the Parliament House and have vowed to carry on their sit-in till Tuesday morning to register their protest against the government.
