PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan condemns the recent sidelining of prominent journalists in Pakistan, warning of the implications for democracy. He stresses that the silencing of media poses a significant threat to democratic values.Summary
ISLAMABAD â€" PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan said on Friday the freedom of media has been strangled, pointing out that leading journalists were forced to leave their jobs.
Speaking in the Senate, the legislator said Talat Hussain, Murtaza Solangi, Nusrat Javeed, Matiullah Jan and Ammar Masood were sacked as part of the efforts to make the media subservient.
“Media has been silenced. These journalists have been sorted out. Talat was forced to leave Geo, Nusrat has had to leave DawnNews, Murtaza Solangi has left Capital TV, and Waqt TV sacked Matiullah Jan.â€
The senator termed the five journalists as leading stars of journalism in Pakistan, adding one can disagree with them, but they should not be sidelined. He also termed media as an indispensable part of democracy. He feared that silencing of media would ultimately lead to “death of democracyâ€. Â
Khan regretted that the sackings were only affecting the working journalists. “They are losing jobs. Owners are not facing any problems. The working journalist is suffering.â€Â
