Senior TV producers forced into shelf-stacking jobs as UK industry crisis deepens

LONDON-Senior television producers with decades of experience are taking on jobs as shelf-stackers, car park attendants, and pub workers as the UK’s TV industry grapples with an ongoing crisis, The Guardian reported. The paper spoke to dozens of seasoned professionals who have been forced into entry-level roles due to a severe lack of work, with some even selling their homes or depleting their life savings. Industry experts estimate that thousands of workers have been affected.

One producer with over 20 years of experience is now working in a pub, while another with seven years in the industry is taking on temporary labor jobs. Others have resorted to roles such as supermarket checkout assistants, classroom aides, and tour guides. A former six-figure salary producer, now living off savings, said, “You could fill a stadium with everyone that’s been affected. It’s 40 times worse for the film and TV industry right now, and nobody seems to notice.”

According to a recent survey by the Film and TV Charity, nearly a fifth of industry freelancers reported being out of work, having worked fewer than three months in the past year. Online support groups with thousands of members have emerged to help those transitioning to new careers.

The crisis has been fueled by a combination of factors, including a post-pandemic production slowdown and shifting viewer habits. Broadcast TV has seen record declines in reach, with Ofcom reporting significant drops in viewership. For instance, ITV2’s Love Island attracted 4.7 million viewers in 2019 but only 2.2 million for its 2023 premiere. Meanwhile, streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon are focusing on big-budget US dramas, reducing their collaboration with British broadcasters.

Unscripted programming, such as reality shows and quiz shows, has been hit hardest. Insiders blame a lack of risk-taking by commissioners and a shift toward expensive dramas. Ali Carron, a producer known for shows like Only Fools and Horses, described the situation as unprecedented, warning that the industry’s current struggles could deter working-class talent from entering the field.

Steven D Wright, a former Channel 4 commissioner, called it an “existential crisis,” with viewers noticing fewer innovative ideas. “It really is not getting better; it is dying,” he said. While some report a slight improvement in commissioning since last year, industry leaders like Amelia Brown of Fremantle UK predict that 2025 will remain challenging, with significant adjustments needed across the board.
