In the video, shared on X (formerly Twitter), Abbasi appears with his trademark smile as people around him record and ask light-hearted questions. One asks, “You’ve been off-air, are you missing the studio?” Without hesitation, he replies: “Yes why not, I have done it for 25 years and I do miss it.”

The smile lingers, but there is a hint of haste, perhaps caution.

When asked about the reasons behind his removal, Abbasi dodges the question. He simply says he always tried to be balanced, “which means calling what is wrong as wrong.” A subtle truth, courageous yet restrained.

He also spoke the other day at the all-parties conference calling for a new charter of democracy and stressed that independence of the media be ensured.

Abbasi was removed from the airwaves under the guise of going on leave following a fiery episode aired on January 21, 2025. He had been raising critical questions about the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment, Pakistan’s alarming human rights situation, and the legitimacy of the February 8, 2024 elections.

A source close to the matter revealed at the time: “His searing questions did not go down well with the powers that be, who subsequently pressured the management to remove him from the air.”

The silence that followed was deafening.

Kashif Abbasi is no stranger to recognition. In 2017, he was awarded Most Credible Anchor of the Year at the AGAHI Journalism Awards. His wife, Meher Bokhari, is also a noted journalist, currently with Dunya News.

But Abbasi’s case is far from isolated. It adds to a growing list of journalists silenced for challenging powerful interests in Pakistan.

In August 2022, ARY News fired Arshad Sharif just two months before his tragic killing in Kenya. The official line was that Sharif had violated ARY’s social media policy, but insiders said it was a strategic move to lift the ban imposed on the channel. He paid the ultimate price.

In May 2021, Hamid Mir was removed from Geo News after speaking out at a protest in support of assaulted journalist Asad Toor. It wasn’t the first time his show Capital Talk had been banned. The previous ban occurred during the Musharraf era.

Then in October 2024, GNN anchor Samina Pasha was forced to resign. “Change your stance or leave,” she was told. She chose to walk away to preserve her journalistic conscience.

Sami Ibrahim, another prominent anchor, remains without work. “Wherever I tried to secure a job, the channel was warned it would face the same fate as BOL News,” he said, referring to the repeated clampdowns on the media group.

These aren't just names—they are voices of a nation being muffled.

While Kashif Abbasi’s reappearance offers a glimmer of defiance, it also serves as a painful reminder of the cost of speaking truth to power in Pakistan.
