ISLAMABAD—Once a familiar face in millions of homes across Pakistan, Kashif Abbasi, the veteran host of Off the Record on ARY News, reemerged this week, not behind a studio desk, but in a short social media clip and at the all-parties conference in Islamabad.
It marked five months since being taken off air amidst increasing media suppression.
In the video, shared on X (formerly Twitter), Abbasi appears with his trademark smile as people around him record and ask light-hearted questions. One asks, “You’ve been off-air, are you missing the studio?” Without hesitation, he replies: “Yes why not, I have done it for 25 years and I do miss it.”
The smile lingers, but there is a hint of haste, perhaps caution.
When asked about the reasons behind his removal, Abbasi dodges the question. He simply says he always tried to be balanced, “which means calling what is wrong as wrong.” A subtle truth, courageous yet restrained.
He also spoke the other day at the all-parties conference calling for a new charter of democracy and stressed that independence of the media be ensured.
Abbasi was removed from the airwaves under the guise of going on leave following a fiery episode aired on January 21, 2025. He had been raising critical questions about the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment, Pakistan’s alarming human rights situation, and the legitimacy of the February 8, 2024 elections.
A source close to the matter revealed at the time: “His searing questions did not go down well with the powers that be, who subsequently pressured the management to remove him from the air.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
Kashif Abbasi is no stranger to recognition. In 2017, he was awarded Most Credible Anchor of the Year at the AGAHI Journalism Awards. His wife, Meher Bokhari, is also a noted journalist, currently with Dunya News.
But Abbasi’s case is far from isolated. It adds to a growing list of journalists silenced for challenging powerful interests in Pakistan.
In August 2022, ARY News fired Arshad Sharif just two months before his tragic killing in Kenya. The official line was that Sharif had violated ARY’s social media policy, but insiders said it was a strategic move to lift the ban imposed on the channel. He paid the ultimate price.
In May 2021, Hamid Mir was removed from Geo News after speaking out at a protest in support of assaulted journalist Asad Toor. It wasn’t the first time his show Capital Talk had been banned. The previous ban occurred during the Musharraf era.
Then in October 2024, GNN anchor Samina Pasha was forced to resign. “Change your stance or leave,” she was told. She chose to walk away to preserve her journalistic conscience.
Sami Ibrahim, another prominent anchor, remains without work. “Wherever I tried to secure a job, the channel was warned it would face the same fate as BOL News,” he said, referring to the repeated clampdowns on the media group.
These aren't just names—they are voices of a nation being muffled.
While Kashif Abbasi’s reappearance offers a glimmer of defiance, it also serves as a painful reminder of the cost of speaking truth to power in Pakistan.

یہ پانچ ماہ بعد کی پہلی جھلک تھی، جب انہیں بڑھتی ہوئی میڈیا سینسرشپ کے دوران آف ایئر کیا گیا تھا۔
X (سابقہ ٹوئٹر) پر شیئر کی گئی ویڈیو میں کاشف عباسی اپنے مخصوص انداز کی مسکراہٹ کے ساتھ نظر آتے ہیں، جبکہ اردگرد لوگ انہیں فلم کرتے اور ہلکے پھلکے سوالات کرتے ہیں۔ ایک شخص پوچھتا ہے، "آپ کافی عرصے سے آف ایئر ہیں، اسٹوڈیو کی کمی محسوس ہوتی ہے؟"
وہ بلا جھجک جواب دیتے ہیں: "ہاں کیوں نہیں، میں نے یہ 25 سال کیا ہے اور مجھے اس کی کمی ضرور محسوس ہوتی ہے۔"
مسکراہٹ برقرار رہتی ہے، مگر انداز میں کچھ جلدی یا شاید احتیاط دکھائی دیتی ہے۔
جب ان سے یہ پوچھا گیا کہ ان کے آف ایئر ہونے کی وجہ کیا تھی، تو انہوں نے سوال کو نظرانداز کر دیا۔ انہوں نے صرف اتنا کہا کہ وہ ہمیشہ متوازن رہنے کی کوشش کرتے تھے، "جس کا مطلب ہے جو غلط ہے اسے غلط کہنا۔"
یہ ایک لطیف مگر جرأت مندانہ سچائی تھی۔
چند روز قبل انہوں نے آل پارٹیز کانفرنس میں بھی خطاب کیا، جہاں انہوں نے نئے چارٹر آف ڈیموکریسی کا مطالبہ کرتے ہوئے میڈیا کی آزادی کو یقینی بنانے پر زور دیا۔
کاشف عباسی کو 21 جنوری 2025 کو نشر ہونے والے ایک تند و تیز شو کے بعد "چھٹی" پر بھیجنے کے بہانے آف ایئر کر دیا گیا۔ اس پروگرام میں انہوں نے 26ویں آئینی ترمیم، پاکستان میں انسانی حقوق کی خراب صورتحال، اور 8 فروری 2024 کے انتخابات کی شفافیت پر تنقیدی سوالات اٹھائے تھے۔
اس وقت ایک قریبی ذریعے نے انکشاف کیا تھا:
"ان کے تیز سوالات طاقتور حلقوں کو ناگوار گزرے، جس کے بعد انہوں نے انتظامیہ پر دباؤ ڈالا کہ انہیں آف ایئر کر دیا جائے۔"
پھر جو خاموشی چھائی، وہ بہت کچھ کہہ گئی۔
کاشف عباسی کوئی معمولی نام نہیں۔ 2017 میں انہیں اگاہی جرنلزم ایوارڈز میں سال کا سب سے معتبر اینکر قرار دیا گیا تھا۔ ان کی اہلیہ، مہر بخاری، بھی ایک معروف صحافی ہیں اور اس وقت دنیا نیوز سے منسلک ہیں۔
لیکن کاشف عباسی کا واقعہ تنہا نہیں۔ یہ پاکستان میں ان صحافیوں کی لمبی فہرست میں ایک اور اضافہ ہے جنہیں طاقتور مفادات کو چیلنج کرنے پر خاموش کر دیا گیا۔
اگست 2022 میں، اے آر وائی نیوز نے ارشد شریف کو برخاست کر دیا—صرف دو ماہ بعد وہ کینیا میں قتل کر دیے گئے۔ بظاہر الزام تھا کہ انہوں نے سوشل میڈیا پالیسی کی خلاف ورزی کی، مگر اندرونی ذرائع کے مطابق یہ اقدام چینل پر پابندی ختم کرانے کی ایک حکمت عملی تھی۔ اس کی قیمت انہیں اپنی جان سے چکانی پڑی۔
مئی 2021 میں، حامد میر کو جیو نیوز سے ہٹا دیا گیا کیونکہ انہوں نے اسلام آباد میں صحافی اسد طور پر تشدد کے خلاف احتجاج میں اسٹیبلشمنٹ پر تنقید کی تھی۔ یہ پہلا موقع نہیں تھا کہ ان کے پروگرام کیپیٹل ٹاک پر پابندی لگی ہو۔ اس سے قبل مشرف دور میں بھی یہ پروگرام بند کیا گیا تھا۔
اکتوبر 2024 میں، جی این این کی اینکر ثمینہ پاشا کو مستعفی ہونے پر مجبور کیا گیا۔ انہیں کہا گیا: "اپنا مؤقف تبدیل کرو یا استعفیٰ دو۔"
انہوں نے صحافتی ضمیر کی خاطر استعفیٰ دینا بہتر سمجھا۔
معروف اینکر سمیع ابراہیم کئی ماہ سے بے روزگار ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا: "جہاں بھی نوکری کی کوشش کی، چینل کو خبردار کیا گیا کہ اس کا انجام بھی بول نیوز جیسا ہوگا۔"
یہ صرف چند نام نہیں—یہ اس قوم کی وہ آوازیں ہیں جنہیں چپ کرا دیا گیا ہے۔
کاشف عباسی کی دوبارہ جھلک اگرچہ ایک ہلکی سی مزاحمت کی علامت ہے، لیکن یہ اس کربناک حقیقت کی بھی یاد دہانی ہے کہ پاکستان میں سچ بولنے کی قیمت بہت بھاری ہے۔
