LHC summons IG Punjab, demands CCTV footage in journalist Shakir Awan case
The Lahore High Court has ordered IG Punjab to appear regarding the kidnapping of journalist Shakir Awan. The court criticized the slow response of authorities and demanded CCTV footage by the next hearing.

LAHORE—The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday issued stern directives in the case of journalist Shakir Mahmood Awan’s alleged kidnapping, ordering the production of the suspect in court by Monday. Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh presided over the hearing of a petition filed by Awan's mother seeking his recovery.

The court expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities’ handling of the case and summoned IG Punjab in a personal capacity. In his absence, Additional IG Punjab Shahzad Sultan appeared before the court, explaining that the IG Punjab was in Islamabad.

During the proceedings, the court directed the CEO of Safe City to provide CCTV footage relevant to the case. However, the CEO stated that acquiring and presenting the footage would take additional time, prompting criticism from the court.

“You are not complying with the court order,” remarked Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

The public prosecutor informed the court that an FIR had been registered and investigations were underway. However, Advocate Azhar Siddique, representing Awan’s family, argued that filing the FIR alone did not absolve the police of their responsibility to recover the missing journalist.

Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh reiterated the need for swift compliance with court orders, warning authorities against delays. The court directed all relevant officials to ensure the Safe City footage is produced at the next hearing and insisted that concrete progress be made in locating Awan.

The hearing highlighted growing concerns over the safety of journalists in Pakistan and the state’s responsibility to ensure their protection.
