Indian media declares war and defeats Pakistan — all without leaving the studio!

Indian television channels launched an unfounded campaign against Pakistan, reporting fictitious military victories and alleged attacks. Prominent figures criticized this sensationalism, highlighting its impact on public perception and truth in journalism.

ISLAMABAD — On Thursday evening, Indian television channels declared an all-out imaginary war against Pakistan, reporting with astonishing confidence that cities had been destroyed, fighter jets downed, ports bombed, and even that the Pakistani army chief had been arrested — all without a shred of evidence.

The sensationalist and aggressive broadcasts left viewers — including many Indians — stunned by the brazen display of misinformation. Indian media personalities, notorious for their hyper-nationalistic rhetoric, appeared to plunge into a make-believe world where Pakistan was obliterated and India had achieved instant victory.

Senator Sherry Rehman, reacting to the media hysteria, asked, “Why is Indian media in Bollywood-on-steroid mode?” She attributed the behavior to the downing of five Indian jets by the Pakistan Air Force. She said Indian media was trying to distract its domestic audience with “fun myths like Lahore seaport bombing.” She added that “Godi media journalists and channels have lost credibility, so have lost the effective ability of executing battlefield psy ops.”

By Friday evening, the full extent of the disinformation campaign was apparent. Newsrooms shouted falsehoods theatrically, hoping loud voices would lend credibility to wild claims.

Some channels, however, showed brief flashes of accountability. A newscaster on Aaj Tak admitted, while still shouting, that “some unverified” reports were aired and sought forgiveness.

Yet the few voices of restraint faced censorship. The Wire, an online Indian news outlet that refrained from sensationalism, was banned on Friday.

Among the more shocking claims, prominent journalist Barkha Dutt tweeted that the Indian Navy had targeted Karachi port in retaliation for alleged Pakistani drone and missile attacks. Meanwhile, Times Now staged a fictional coup in Pakistan, claiming the army chief had been arrested. Republic TV went a step further, reporting a massive explosion outside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s residence and that he was taken to a safe house.

India Today claimed that Pakistan’s F-16 and JF-17 fighter jets were shot down after drone and missile strikes in Jammu, Rajasthan, and Punjab — a claim Pakistan promptly denied, stating no such attack had occurred.

Adding to the surrealism, Republic TV also announced that a Pakistani pilot had been captured, though no evidence was presented.

At 1:35 AM Friday, India Today declared: “India targets Lahore, Navy, Attacks Karachi.”

While Pakistanis woke to calm streets and ordinary routines, Indian viewers were left bewildered. Rohit Raj posted on X: “As an Indian, I’m fuming. Last night, our news channels fed lies, fake strikes in Karachi, imaginary invasion, recycled videos. No facts. Just drama.” Another Indian, Basant Maheshwari, wrote: “Today I am deleting all tweets that I made without verifying the claims of our Indian media channels.”

Independent Urdu reported that leading Indian channels were running nothing but fake news. Dawn described the Indian media coverage as having shifted “from journalism to jingoism.”

Influencer Dhruv Rathee condemned the false reporting and shared a clip of Gaurav Arya claiming Indian troops had entered Pakistan. Rathee urged viewers: “Never watch these fake news channels again. Share with your family members also.”

One is left wondering if these anchors and self-proclaimed experts — whose theatrical delivery borders on the absurd — believe that loud lies can alter reality on the ground.
