ISLAMABAD — On Thursday evening, Indian television channels declared an all-out imaginary war against Pakistan, reporting with astonishing confidence that cities had been destroyed, fighter jets downed, ports bombed, and even that the Pakistani army chief had been arrested — all without a shred of evidence.
The sensationalist and aggressive broadcasts left viewers — including many Indians — stunned by the brazen display of misinformation. Indian media personalities, notorious for their hyper-nationalistic rhetoric, appeared to plunge into a make-believe world where Pakistan was obliterated and India had achieved instant victory.
Senator Sherry Rehman, reacting to the media hysteria, asked, “Why is Indian media in Bollywood-on-steroid mode?” She attributed the behavior to the downing of five Indian jets by the Pakistan Air Force. She said Indian media was trying to distract its domestic audience with “fun myths like Lahore seaport bombing.” She added that “Godi media journalists and channels have lost credibility, so have lost the effective ability of executing battlefield psy ops.”
By Friday evening, the full extent of the disinformation campaign was apparent. Newsrooms shouted falsehoods theatrically, hoping loud voices would lend credibility to wild claims.
Some channels, however, showed brief flashes of accountability. A newscaster on Aaj Tak admitted, while still shouting, that “some unverified” reports were aired and sought forgiveness.
Yet the few voices of restraint faced censorship. The Wire, an online Indian news outlet that refrained from sensationalism, was banned on Friday.
Among the more shocking claims, prominent journalist Barkha Dutt tweeted that the Indian Navy had targeted Karachi port in retaliation for alleged Pakistani drone and missile attacks. Meanwhile, Times Now staged a fictional coup in Pakistan, claiming the army chief had been arrested. Republic TV went a step further, reporting a massive explosion outside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s residence and that he was taken to a safe house.
India Today claimed that Pakistan’s F-16 and JF-17 fighter jets were shot down after drone and missile strikes in Jammu, Rajasthan, and Punjab — a claim Pakistan promptly denied, stating no such attack had occurred.
Adding to the surrealism, Republic TV also announced that a Pakistani pilot had been captured, though no evidence was presented.
At 1:35 AM Friday, India Today declared: “India targets Lahore, Navy, Attacks Karachi.”
While Pakistanis woke to calm streets and ordinary routines, Indian viewers were left bewildered. Rohit Raj posted on X: “As an Indian, I’m fuming. Last night, our news channels fed lies, fake strikes in Karachi, imaginary invasion, recycled videos. No facts. Just drama.” Another Indian, Basant Maheshwari, wrote: “Today I am deleting all tweets that I made without verifying the claims of our Indian media channels.”
Independent Urdu reported that leading Indian channels were running nothing but fake news. Dawn described the Indian media coverage as having shifted “from journalism to jingoism.”
Influencer Dhruv Rathee condemned the false reporting and shared a clip of Gaurav Arya claiming Indian troops had entered Pakistan. Rathee urged viewers: “Never watch these fake news channels again. Share with your family members also.”
One is left wondering if these anchors and self-proclaimed experts — whose theatrical delivery borders on the absurd — believe that loud lies can alter reality on the ground.
اسلام آباد: اگر جمعرات کی شام بھارتی صحافیوں پر یقین کیا جائے، تو پاکستان کو نیست و نابود کر دیا گیا اور دنیا کے نقشے سے مٹا دیا گیا۔ جھوٹ کی یہ بے شرم اور بے باک نمائش اتنی حیران کن تھی کہ خود بھارتی بھی ششدر رہ گئے۔
اگرچہ ایک ایسے ملک میں جہاں ارنب جیسے چیخنے والے اینکر اور سفید مونچھوں والا خود ساختہ ماہر میجر موجود ہو، یہ سب غیر متوقع نہیں، مگر بھارتی صحافیوں نے جس طرح پاکستانی شہروں کو ایک ایک کر کے “تباہ” کیا، دنیا سوچنے پر مجبور ہو گئی کہ آخر وہ کس دنیا میں رہ رہے ہیں؟ ظاہر ہے، ان کے بولی وڈ طرز کے فوری فتح و شکست والے تخیلاتی منظرنامے میں۔
اس طرز عمل نے سینیٹر شیری رحمان کو یہ کہنے پر مجبور کیا، “بھارتی میڈیا بولی وڈ آن اسٹیرائڈز موڈ میں کیوں ہے؟” ان کا کہنا تھا کہ شاید یہ سب کچھ پاکستان ایئر فورس کے جوابی حملے اور پانچ بھارتی طیارے مار گرانے کی وجہ سے ہے اور “اپنے عوام کو لاہور سی پورٹ بمباری جیسے تفریحی جھوٹ سے مصروف رکھنے کی کوشش ہے۔” انہوں نے مزید کہا: “گودی میڈیا کے صحافی اور چینلز اپنی ساکھ کھو چکے ہیں، اس لیے میدان جنگ میں نفسیاتی جنگ کی مؤثر صلاحیت بھی گنوا بیٹھے ہیں۔”
جمعے کی شام تک یہ واضح ہو گیا تھا کہ بھارتی میڈیا کے پاس پیش کرنے کو صرف جھوٹی اور دیوانی دعوے ہی ہیں۔ اگر انہیں لگا کہ چیخنے چلانے سے ان کے دعووں میں کوئی سچائی آ جائے گی، تو وہ بُری طرح غلط تھے۔
کچھ کو یہ احساس بھی ہو گیا کہ ان کی خبریں کسی بھی قسم کے ثبوت سے خالی ہیں۔ بھارتی چینل آج تک کے نیوز کاسٹر نے اعتراف کیا کہ “کچھ غیر مصدقہ” خبریں نشر ہو گئیں۔ اس پر اس نے چیختے ہوئے کہا: “ہم اس کے لیے آپ سے معافی مانگتے ہیں۔”
تاہم، آن لائن بھارتی چینل ‘دی وائر’، جو چیخنے چلانے اور جھوٹ بولنے کی روش سے دور رہا، کو جمعہ کے روز بند کر دیا گیا۔
بھارتی صحافی برکھا دت، جو حال ہی میں پاکستان آئی تھیں اور سابق وزیر اعظم نواز شریف سے لاہور میں ملاقات کر چکی ہیں، نے دعویٰ کیا، “ہماری نیوی نے کراچی پورٹ کو نشانہ بنایا ہے… جو پاکستان کے میزائل اور ڈرون حملوں کے جواب میں بڑے پیمانے پر جاری جوابی کارروائی کا حصہ ہے۔”
ادھر ‘ٹائمز ناؤ’ نے تو پاکستان میں بغاوت کروا دی اور آرمی چیف کو گرفتار کر لیا۔
‘ریپبلک ٹی وی’ نے دعویٰ کیا کہ وزیراعظم شہباز شریف کی رہائش گاہ کے باہر ایک دھماکہ ہوا اور انہیں محفوظ مقام پر منتقل کر دیا گیا!
‘انڈیا ٹوڈے’ نے دعویٰ کیا کہ پاکستان کے ایک ایف-16 اور دو جے ایف-17 طیارے مار گرائے گئے “جموں، راجستھان اور پنجاب پر ڈرون اور میزائل حملوں کی لہر کے بعد۔
جموں پر مبینہ حملے کی خبر نشر ہوتے ہی پاکستان نے واضح کر دیا کہ کوئی ایسا حملہ نہیں کیا گیا۔
‘ریپبلک ٹی وی’ نے ایک پاکستانی پائلٹ کو گرفتار کرنے کا دعویٰ بھی کر ڈالا۔ دنیا اب تک اس “گرفتار” پائلٹ کو دیکھنے کی منتظر ہے۔
جمعے کی رات 1:35 بجے، انڈیا ٹوڈے نے سرخی چلائی: “بھارت نے لاہور کو نشانہ بنایا، نیوی، کراچی پر حملہ۔”
ادھر پاکستان میں جمعہ کا دن معمول کے مطابق شروع ہوا اور لوگ حیران تھے۔
لیکن بھارت میں غصہ تھا۔ بھارتی شہری روہت راج نے ایکس (ٹوئٹر) پر لکھا: “ایک بھارتی ہونے کے ناطے میں غصے میں ہوں۔ ہماری نیوز چینلز نے کل رات جھوٹ، فرضی حملے، خیالی دراندازی اور پرانی ویڈیوز پر مبنی ڈرامے دکھائے۔ کوئی حقیقت نہیں تھی۔” بسنت مہیشوری نے لکھا کہ وہ کبھی ٹویٹ ڈیلیٹ نہیں کرتے، “مگر آج میں وہ تمام ٹویٹس ڈیلیٹ کر رہا ہوں جو بغیر تصدیق کے بھارتی میڈیا کے دعووں پر کی تھیں۔”
‘انڈیپنڈنٹ اردو’ نے اندازہ لگایا کہ بھارت کے سرکردہ چینلز کے پاس پاکستان سے متعلق خبریں جھوٹ پر مبنی ہیں۔ روزنامہ ‘ڈان’ نے بھارتی میڈیا کی کوریج کو “صحافت سے جنون تک” کا سفر قرار دیا۔
دھرُو رٹھی نے ایکس پر لکھا کہ بھارتی نیوز چینلز کے جھوٹ دیکھنا ناقابل برداشت ہے۔ گورو آریا کی وہ کلپ جس میں وہ دعویٰ کر رہا تھا کہ بھارتی فوج پاکستان میں داخل ہو چکی ہے، پر تبصرہ کرتے ہوئے کہا: “یہ جعلی نیوز چینلز کبھی نہ دیکھیں۔ اپنے گھر والوں کو بھی بتائیں۔”
سوال یہ ہے کہ کیا یہ بھارتی چینلز، ان کے دیوانے اینکرز، میزبان اور مہمان، جو چیخ چیخ کر اپنی آوازیں کھو بیٹھے ہیں، یہ سمجھتے ہیں کہ ان کی ہسٹیریا، چیخیں، اور جھوٹ کسی طرح زمینی حقیقت کو بدل سکتے ہیں؟
