ISLAMABAD – A local journalist was reported killed Thursday in Kalat, Balochistan by unidentified gunmen on motorcycles.
The journalist was identified as Muhammad Jan Sumalani who worked for Daily Qudrat and Brahvi language Daily Talaar.
The motive behind the killing was not immediately clear. Police are said to have started investigations after handing the body to the relatives.
Sumalani becomes the first journalist to be murdered in Pakistan this year. In 2016, six media persons were killed - three gunned down by unknown attackers with as many losing their lives in suicide attacks.
One of the suicide attacks was at the Civil Hospital in Balochistan’s capital of Quetta that killed DawnNews cameraman Mehmood Khan and Shehzad Ahmed of Aaj News, and many others.
