Local newsrooms get global boost through IPI's four-month Accelerator

Are you a local publisher wondering how to turn your content into revenue, adapt to shifting audience behaviors, or keep pace with rapidly changing tech? Then the International Press Institute’s (IPI) Local News Accelerator could be just what you need.

Now in its third edition, this four-month program is designed to help local media outlets around the globe strengthen their editorial and financial foundations. Through personalized advisory services, strategic tools, and hands-on training, the accelerator empowers newsrooms to better serve their communities and survive in today’s tough media landscape.

IPI believes media innovation is essential to press freedom. That’s why it has spent four years developing support systems tailored to local publishers. This program provides a structure to identify newsroom pain points and find actionable solutions—from building digital business models to exploring new formats like newsletters, podcasts, and video storytelling.

The accelerator begins with a full month of needs assessments, followed by intensive training and customized one-on-one coaching. Previous participants have doubled subscribers, launched successful crowdfunding campaigns, and even created new engagement tools—all with the help of IPI's expert mentors and global peer network.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Legally registered media outlet from any country
  • Clear focus on serving local communities
  • Strong commitment to quality journalism and ethical practices
  • A two-person team available to commit 4 hours per week for 4 months
  • A defined audience strategy backed by research
  • Willingness to embrace new tools and ideas
  • A vision for long-term growth
  • Submission of a proposal identifying a specific need or challenge

Application Deadline: August 24, 2025
