ISLAMABAD – Ammar Masood, a television program host, analyst, and media consultant tweeted on Saturday that the safest place left for journalists now was the social media.

“Here no one can fire you, no one can cut your pay, and there’s no restriction on publishing,” he tweeted in Urdu.

His comment comes in the wake of massive layoffs of employees by media houses, pay cuts, and censorship.

Several news organizations continue to terminate staff, the latest being The Express Tribune and BOL News.

On Friday, reports emerged that prominent presenter Moeed Pirzada had quit Dunya News following a drastic pay cut of about 35 percent. Other anchors at the channel also face similar cuts, insiders say.

Leading journalists and columnists often announce on Twitter that the newspapers they write for at times drop their articles.
