RIUJ continues protest against layoffs at Daily Express

ISLAMABAD – The Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) continued its protest against the layoffs at Daily Express for the sixth day.

Despite the biting cold, the protesters stayed put outside the newspaper’s offices.

Afzal Butt, President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) said the protest would continue until the fulfilment of demands.

The journalists chanted slogans against the newspaper owners and called for speeding up the protest campaign.

The paper last week sacked nearly 30 employees, closing down its computer section and the newsroom.

The management told staff members to submit their resignations stating they were doing so of their own will if they wanted to get paid two-month salaries.

Among those laid off were employees who served the organization for many years.
