ISLAMABAD – The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists Thursday condemned the arrest of a Channel 24 producer and the last week’s killing of journalist Bakshish Elahi (pictured) in Haripur.

The union’s governing body meeting at the National Press Club called on the federal and provincial governments to arrest the murderers.

They demanded setting up of a judicial commission to probe the matter and urged both governments to announce special package for the deceased journalist’s family.

The members also strongly condemned producer Syed Talha’s arrest on the occasion of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s appearance before the Judicial Investigation Team (JIT).

The meeting, presided over by Acting President Nasir Hashmi, also discussed lay-offs and delay in payment of salaries in some media houses.

The house decided to hold elections for the vacant position of president. A three-member election committee headed by Iqbal Jaffery with Ahsan Premee and Nisar Shaikh as members was constituted.
