Report reveals alarming increase in attacks against journalists

ISLAMABAD—A new report by media rights watchdog Freedom Network has revealed that over the past year, at least 140 cases of threats and attacks against journalists, media professionals, and media organizations were reported in Pakistan.

The report, released ahead of World Press Freedom Day, showed an annual increase of over 60% in violations between May 2022 and March 2023 from 86 in 2021-22. Islamabad was found to be the riskiest place to practice journalism in the country, with 40% of the 140 violations taking place in the city. Punjab 35 (25 percent) and Sindh 32 (23 percent) followed.

The report also documented the killings of at least five journalists in Pakistan during the period under review. Freedom Network has urged Pakistani authorities to fulfill their promises to protect journalists and combat the increasing violence against them.
