PFUJ urges PEMRA to withdraw ban on reporting motorway rape case

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has strongly condemned PEMRA for banning reporting of the motorway rape case at Gujarpura near Lahore last month.

The union termed the electronic media regulator’s ban uncalled for and unprecedented.

President PFUJ Shahzada Zulfiqar and Secretary-General Nasir Zaidi in a joint statement urged PEMRA to withdraw the notification immediately.

They said such restrictions were against press freedom and freedom of expression, guaranteed in Pakistan’s constitution.

The PFUJ leaders said imposing censorship and ban on reporting any crime or incident is unacceptable, and the media will not allow such prohibitions in the country. They said PEMRA should not use its laws for imposing censorships and issuing press advice.
