ISLAMABAD—Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has demanded that media owners pay the salaries of media workers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
In a statement issued on Friday, PFUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar and Secretary-General Nasir Zaidi said that the financial condition of the media houses had improved a lot. "The industry received the payment for advertisements in the last few years and received government and private sector advertising that boosted revenue. Therefore, the news organizations must pay salaries in advance so that media workers could do shopping before the auspicious occasion."
PFUJ leaders hoped that the media houses would pay heed to its appeal. "We think that media houses are financially able to make such payments, and there is no justification for not doing so given that they are financially doing well."
The two leaders observed that media persons worked day and night, risking their lives to report. "They did all this for their institution and the employer. Therefore, the employers also must look after these workers."
