Mir Shakil wants protests to press for his release called off

ISLAMABAD—Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, Editor-in-Chief of Jang Group and Geo, has requested for calling off protests scheduled across the country on Tuesday (March 24) to press for his release from NAB custody.

Rehman, arrested by the National Accountability Bureau on March 12 in a decades-old land transaction, requested this because of the Coronavirus issue.

“I have learned that a protest is being organized across the country on the 24th to protest against my illegal detention by NAB. I am requesting all journalists, human rights activists, legal fraternity, and professional associations to look after yourself and follow the directives of healthcare professionals regarding your and the public’s safety,” he said.

He thanked all those who have supported him and appreciated their struggle for freedom of press and expression.

“However, at this time, I am requesting you to call off the protest and support the government’s health and safety directives and unite to safeguard the people.
