KARACHI - The Karachi Press Club building has been formally handed over to the governing body after undergoing five years of restoration.
The transfer of ownership of the historic building took place in a ceremony, arabnews.pk reported.
It said that Jehangir Siddiqui, Chairman of the Endowment Fund Trust (EFT), Managing Trustee Hameed Haroon, journalists, civil society members, and other officials of the trust attended the ceremony.
“The entire building was almost in ruins and required preservation work. So, the press club reached out to the EFT for the restoration of this British-era building,” the newspaper quoted the club’s former secretary Aamir Latif as saying.
The cost of the project was Rs10 million, Supervising Engineer Mohanlal S. Ochani said.
Ochani has helped with the restoration work of more than a 100 other historical buildings including Karachi’s Mohatta Palace.
Karachi Press Club Secretary, Maqsood Yousuf said the facility has been a hub of various press freedom movements in Pakistan. “Not only is the building remarkable but the history of the club, which began its activities here in 1958, is also a matter of pride for the journalist community,” he was quoted as saying.
