ISLAMABAD— Pakistan is in mourning following the tragic death of renowned anchorperson and senior journalist, Arshad Sharif, who was shot and killed in Kenya. The Kenyan local police have initiated an investigation into the incident, which has left the nation in shock and grief.
Sharif's wife, Javeria Siddique, confirmed his death in a tweet, saying, "I lost my friend, husband, and my favourite journalist @arsched today. As per police, he was shot in Kenya." She requested the public and media to refrain from speculation and spreading rumors regarding his death, emphasizing the need for respect and sensitivity during this difficult time.
Asim Iftikhar, a spokesperson for the Foreign Office, stated that Pakistan's High Commission in Kenya is actively gathering information from the authorities. However, no further details have been revealed regarding the circumstances of Sharif's murder. The uncertainty surrounding his death has deepened the sorrow and heightened the call for a thorough investigation.
Sharif, aged 49, had a distinguished career in journalism, working for several prominent media institutions. He was best known for his long association with ARY News, where he hosted the widely viewed program 'Power Play.' His contributions to journalism were recognized with the Pride of Performance Award on March 23, 2019.
The news of Sharif's death elicited an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues and admirers. Salman Iqbal, CEO of ARY News, expressed profound sorrow, stating, "I still can't believe it. I am speechless. May Allah SWT grant him the highest place in Jannah. Aameen." Sharif's untimely demise has left a void in the media industry that will be hard to fill.
Sharif had fled Pakistan following the arrest of PTI leader Shahbaz Gill. Subsequently, ARY issued a statement declaring that "Arshad Sharif has no association with the organization anymore." Reports indicate that he had joined BOL News before his death.
