Jang reporter Syed Mohammad Askari returns home after mysterious abduction

KARACHI—Syed Mohammad Askari, a senior reporter with the daily Jang, who went missing on Sunday, returned home on Monday, according to his colleagues.

According to the Jang, unknown officials in plain clothes abducted Askari in Karachi on Saturday night. The journalists' associations across the country widely condemned his alleged abduction.

Saqib Sagheer, a colleague of Askari, told Dawn that the senior reporter had returned home. He said Askari was dropped off near Sohrab Goth, but his wallet and mobile phone were not returned.

In a tweet, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said that journalists continue to be abducted in this manner, without charge, calling into question the state's commitment to democracy and its capacity to brook criticism and opposition.
