Okay. There is a point to this story. So bear with me. In our house in Delhi we have an Allwyn Prestcold refrigerator that was bought in 1959 and has never stopped working. I have just pulled ice out of it. That is 54 years of keeping its cool. Not even been repaired.
We also have a Baby Belling oven bought in 1953 that we cheerfully use for baking and it bakes perfectly...the wires in the oven that glow hot have never burnt out.
In the other room we have a Singer sewing machine that was given to my mother in 1946 when she got married, ostensibly to stitch baby clothes for me and my sister. The machine hums with splendid precision.
Last month, I purchased a Godrej air conditioner in Delhi. It stopped working properly on the sixth day. The chappies from the outlet have come and so has some guy from Godrej and they have hemmed and hawed and we are all agreed that the damn thing is faulty and should be replaced but this genial and happy agreement has not yet borne fruition. I have offered cold drinks, tea, coffee and they have offered hope.
On the same day I also bought a Samsung fridge to buddy up with ol’ Reliable and when they were carting it up to the 7th floor they dented the door. The whole gang have come three times, we have discussed that the door is dented and also agreed (see above) with equal affection that it was done by carriage. I now have waited four days for them to get clearance from the Samsung boss who is probably off playing golf and I bet his fridge door hasn’t got a dent.
So if you know anyone who knows anyone who knows Mr Godrej who lives ostensibly in Mumbai or whoever is the boss of Samsung India whatever can you please email them my litany and request them to please pretty please do something about it.
A 67-year-old sewing machine, a 59-year-old fridge, a 60-year-old oven and they are all working...on the one side.
And on the other, seven complaint numbers and have now opened a file. Go figure.

If my call is so important to them, why don’t they answer it for 22 minutes?
How come when I want to, but something specific online is the only item out of stock.
