ISLAMABAD – Cyril Almeida, an assistant editor at Dawn newspaper, was on Wednesday awarded the International Press Institute (IPI) 71st World Press Freedom Hero Award at a ceremony in Geneva.
“It's an honour to recognize the courageous journalism done by Cyril and his newspaper,” the IPI said on Twitter. “We’re proud to award the 2019 IPI World #PressFreedom Hero award to #Pakistan’s Cyril Almeida (@cyalm), columnist and assistant editor for @dawn_com.”
The IPI had named Almeida as its 71st World Press Freedom Hero in April.

The award honors journalists who have made significant contributions to the promotion of press freedom, particularly in the face of considerable personal risk.
Almeida is a Rhodes scholar with a law degree from Oxford University. He briefly worked as a lawyer in Pakistan before entering journalism.
