ISLAMABAD—The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on Pakistani authorities for an “immediate and impartial investigation” into an attack on journalist Zahid Shareef Rana.
The reporter associated with Daily Ausaf was allegedly targeted in Bhakar (Punjab) for a report on political associates and relatives of a legislator who belonged to the ruling party.
In a video of the incident recorded by a bystander, Rana can be seen being beaten with ropes and batons and shoved to the ground. The assailants also dropped chemicals in his ear and eyes. Six men were identified in the FIR, while four remain unknown.
It is not the first time Rana has been attacked for his work. On January 5, the journalist was targeted following an interview he conducted with a member of Pakistan’s opposition, who accused Khan of “corruption and abuse of power,” the CPJ noted.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) also joined its Pakistan affiliate, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), strongly condemning the attack and urging immediate action against the culprits.
