PEMRA slaps Rs1 million fine on Channel 24

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Tuesday fined Channel 24 Rs1 million for airing a “baseless and unverified report” about Inspector General of Police, A. D. Khawaja.

According to a PEMRA media release, the channel is also required to air an apology by specifically naming A.D. Khawaja. Besides, it will have to run tickers.

The regulator had issued a show-cause notice to Channel 24 on April 11 and asked to explain its position within seven days. However, the news organization sought more time, which was granted until April 24.

PEMRA said no representative of the channel appeared on the said date and no written response was submitted.

After hearing the representatives of the complainant and reviewing the relevant video clips, the channel was found to have violated clauses of the code of conduct for electronic media.
