17 news channels issued show-cause notices for airing false news

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Thursday issued show-cause notices to 17 television news channels for airing false news about the orders of the Lahore High Court banning anti-judiciary speeches of Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

The erring channels issued notices are Geo, Royal, Din, Samaa, DawnNews, ARY, Waqt, BOL, KTN, Kohinoor, Mashriq, Roze, 92 News, Dunya, Channel 5, Aaj and Express News.

“All these news channels aired false/fake news in violation of PEMRA Code of Conduct 2015 which compels channels to on-air accurate and authentic news/information to the viewers,” PEMRA said.

The channel managers are required to appear for a personal hearing on April 24. The regulator warned of legal action if they did not respond.
