LONDON—In a landmark move for the UK media industry, BBC and ITV have announced a collaborative effort to launch a new streaming service aimed at competing with global streaming giants such as Netflix and Disney+. This new platform, named BritStream, is set to offer a vast array of British content, including classic shows, new original series, and exclusive documentaries.
The announcement, made in London, highlights a strategic shift for both organizations as they adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of digital media consumption. BBC Director-General Tim Davie and ITV CEO Carolyn McCall emphasized that this collaboration aims to leverage the strengths of both broadcasters to deliver high-quality British content to a global audience.
BritStream will offer a mix of beloved classics like "Doctor Who" and "Downton Abbey," alongside new original programming developed specifically for the platform. The service will operate on a subscription basis, with competitive pricing aimed at attracting a broad audience.
While initially launching in the UK, BritStream plans to expand its reach internationally, catering to the significant global demand for British television content.
Tim Davie stated, "This collaboration is a testament to the strength and global appeal of British content. By joining forces, we can offer something truly unique to viewers around the world."
Carolyn McCall added, "BritStream is not just a streaming service; it's a celebration of British creativity and storytelling. We are excited to bring this new platform to life and reach audiences in innovative ways."
The launch of BritStream is anticipated later this year, with more details on content and subscription plans to be unveiled in the coming months. This strategic move by BBC and ITV is expected to shake up the streaming industry, providing a robust competitor to existing platforms and offering viewers an unparalleled selection of British programming.
