Let me see if I can get a fix on this and explain what I mean. Have you ever seen someone or been that person who is always doing the right thing and being there?
Whether it is for family or friends or colleagues they sort of start taking your effort for granted and you do it anyway. Then a peer (relative or friend or whatever) does something mild once in a flipping 10 months or something like send a small present or fetch up himself and take everyone out to dinner and suddenly he is the flavor of the month and everyone is so grateful for his crumbs and isn’t he wonderful and wasn’t that so generous of him and so thoughtful.
And you have this gobsmacked look on your face like hey, just a minute, I do this every week, how come I just lost this race?
And then he vanishes for the next 10 months but still has everyone sloshing in this vat of goodwill he has left behind.
Like my friend in Singapore who sends weekly care packs to his aging parents. And his brother in London sends nada, nothing. But a couple of months back he was passing through Mumbai so he stayed home for two days (after five years) and brought a few gifts. Like cigars for dad, perfume for mum and then flew off again.
Now my friend arrives for his three times a year visit like the good son he is and all they can talk about it J’s generosity and how great it was to see him and in the centre of the room in pride of place is a crystal vase he picked up at the airport.
Human nature or simply a case of diminishing returns.

If my call is so important to them, why don’t they answer it for 22 minutes?
How come when I want to, but something specific online is the only item out of stock.
When I get into a queue or lane going fast, the moment I get in, it becomes the slowest and refuses to budge.Read more... | Archives
