ISLAMABAD – Electronic media regulator PEMRA has issued show-cause notices to at least 14 television channels for airing Nehal Hashmi’s speech in which he cast aspersions on the armed forces.
The channels served notices are Neo, Public, Samaa, GNN, Hum News, Metro One, BOL, Channel 5, Channel 24, Geo, 7 News, 92 News, Abb Takk, and ARY.
The regulator said the airing of such a controversial speech violated the code of conduct.
PEMRA pointed out that Hashmi is known for giving controversial statements and was reprimanded by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for his conduct.
“Extending airtime to him is tantamount to willful breach of media ethics as well as PEMRA laws,” the regulator said.
The erring channels are required to submit their replies by October 26, and their CEOs asked to appear for a personal hearing.
As we move into the second week of the stay-home directive, many of us must be discovering a new inner self, and how much we take for granted and miss it sorely when it is gone.
