ISLAMABAD: The electronic media’s regulatory authority PEMRA Friday suspended Geo News Television’s license for 15 days while also slapping a fine of Rs10 million.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by PEMRA Chairman Pervaiz Rathore in Islamabad. In attendance were the authority’s government members. The private members did not attend the meeting.
The meeting deliberated at length on the defense ministry’s application filed against Geo for accusing the ISI and its chief as being involved in the April 19 attack on presenter Hamid Mir.
In the hours following the PEMRA decision, Geo reported the news of its own closure with a graphic showing its logo wrapped in chains. Its signal was later cut and viewers could see the following message: "The license of Geo News has been suspended by PEMRA, therefore the broadcast of channel has been terminated."
