PESHAWAR – Following the arrest of a reporter, the Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) on Tuesday warned of staging protests if the government did not ensure press freedom.
Police and the security forces arrested Gohar Wazir of Khyber News after he interviewed MNA Mohsin Dawar, and covered a protest by Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM).
In a statement, KhUJ President Fida Khattak and General-Secretary Muhammad Naeem pointed out that Wazir’s arrest goes to show that no press freedom exists in Pakistan. On the other hand, the government makes false claims that it is all for freedom of the media, they said.
The KhUJ leaders called for the immediate release of Wazir and said they would start protest if this was not done.
