You get the Nobel peace prize for saving life and holding death back so it does not steal your years. The enemy has to be kept at bay. Angelina Jolie did just that by pre-empting a genetically disposed 87% chance of getting breast cancer by having a mastectomy and kicking it down to 5%. For her six children and their fear that Mummy would die prematurely like grandma.
She did it without fuss, without setting it to music or making herself a martyr. Just a small article in the NYT.
Not only has she changed the dynamics of the war on this widely prevalent disease but also given women around the world a new option and extended several lives by walking the walk. That pink ribbon became a runway to hope. Period. Breast Cancer can be deflected.
I’d give her the prize without thinking. Salute her for being a mother first and everything else after. For displaying the most incredible guts by going under the knife (try it, before you rap her, see how hard it is to volunteer for surgery let alone be taken in because there is no other choice).
And to Brad Pitt a clear and honest acknowledgement for being a man and having her back right through this trying time.
Sit back and think about it: it took a lot of guts…now give her the glory.
