ISLAMABAD: Warning of heavy fines or suspension or revocation of licenses, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Tuesday asked cable operators to stop distribution of unauthorized TV and CD channels and frequently changing positions of licensed TV channels.
PEMRA says the warning has been issued after receiving complaints regarding telecast of unauthorized TV channels, excessive and vulgar CD channels, off-airing of PEMRA-licensed channels as well as frequent change of numbering and positioning of licensed TV channels.
However, the warning seems to be addressing the Geo TV’s gripe about cable operators frequently changing its place. Though Geo News is back on air, it is not being grouped with the news channels as it was before the attack on Hamid Mir.
The PEMRA spokesman said cable TV operators had been explicitly cautioned that suspension of any PEMRA licensed channel or changing channels’ positions on cable TV networks without permission from the authorities was illegal and ultra vires to the PEMRA Ordinance, rules, regulations as well as the terms and conditions of their licenses.
The spokesman appealed to the general public to report any such violation by their cable TV service provider on PEMRA's toll free number 0800-73672 and register complaints and suggestions at www.pemra.gov.pk.
