ISLAMABAD – Electronic media watchdog PEMRA Tuesday issued show cause notices to 27 private TV channels for defying its directive of airing apology for running a false news about a bomb blast in Lahore’s Gulberg neighborhood.
Out of the 29 channels that had aired the fake news, only two – Kohinoor and Channel-5 complied with the authority’s order.
All the erring channels were directed on March 3 to air the apology on March 6 between 6:00-7:00 pm in the same manner and magnitude as the fake news was telecast.
The 27 channels ignoring PEMRA’s orders and served show cause notices are: ARY News, Khyber News, Channel 92, Dunya, Samaa, Metro One, Geo, Awaz, Jaag, Abb Takk, Roze, DawnNews, Mehran, 7News, Lahore News, Neo TV, Capital, Sach, Sindh News, Express News, Din, Waqt, KTN, NewsOne, Channel 24, BOL and K-21.
The channels have been asked to submit their replies within seven days and explain why appropriate action should not be initiated against them.
The national channels were fined Rs1million each and the regional ones Rs0.5 million each for airing the wrong news on February 23.
